10 Repulsive American Foods, According to Non-Americans

America is known for its unique and varied food, but not all of it is appealing to people who are not American. Some foods may make Americans drool, but they can make people from other countries gag. A popular social media thread asked non-Americans what they don’t like about American food.

1. Twinkies

Twinkies are a made food, and many people from other countries prefer to eat natural and fresh foods. Twinkies also last a long time, and they are made with a number of fake colors, flavors, and preservatives. Twinkies taste very fake, which might not be to everyone’s taste. The sponge cake is made with enriched wheat flour, which has been stripped of its nutrients, and the cream filling is made with artificial tastes and ingredients.

2. Corn Dogs

In America, corn dogs, which are also called “hot dogs on a stick,” are a popular snack food. They are basically hot dogs that have been dipped in a batter made of cornmeal and fried. Non-Americans don’t like this food because it has both meat and cornmeal in it. They also don’t like that it has a lot of calories and fat and not much nutrients.

3. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

A classic American afternoon snack is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It might sound easy and tasty to put peanut butter and jelly on bread, but people from other countries find it strange and not very tasty. They don’t like how peanut butter feels, which they say is too sticky, or how sweet jelly goes with salty peanut butter.

4. Cheese in a Can

Cheese in a can is a prepared food with a lot of artificial ingredients, flavors, and preservatives. Many people from other countries put more value on natural and fresh foods than Americans do, and cheese in a can doesn’t meet those standards. Some people might not like the way cheese in a can feels and tastes. It’s cheese that can be sprayed, but it doesn’t taste or feel like real cheese. Some people from other countries might not like the taste because it is too fake.

5. Biscuits and Gravy

In the South, biscuits and gravy are a favorite breakfast food. It is made with biscuits made with buttermilk and a creamy gravy made from pig grease and milk. Non-Americans don’t like this food because it has a lot of calories and fat and because it has sweet biscuits with salty sausage gravy.

6. Root Beer

Root beer is a popular soft drink in the U.S., but people from other countries don’t like it because it tastes strong and strange. Some people say it tastes like cough syrup or drugs. The sassafras root, which is not often used in other countries, gives the drink its main taste.

7. Sweet Potato Casserole

In the United States, sweet potato casserole is a favorite side dish for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It has mashed sweet potatoes and a sweet, buttery nut crust on top. Non-Americans don’t like this dish because it tastes sweet and is topped with marshmallows, which is unusual for a side dish.

8. Candy Corn

Candy corn is a very sweet and sugary treat that might not be to everyone’s taste. Many countries outside of the United States like desserts and candies with less sugar or more complex flavors. Candy corn is also a highly processed candy that has several artificial colors, tastes, and sweeteners. Non-Americans might put more value on natural and fresh foods than candy corn, which doesn’t meet those standards.

9. Jell-O Salad

Some non-Americans may come from places where sweet and savory tastes aren’t often put together in one dish. Some people may find it strange or unappetizing that Jello salads often have both sweet and salty parts. If you didn’t grow up eating Jello salad, its texture, which is jiggly and a little rubbery, may be strange or unpleasant to you.

Jello salads might also have things like canned veggies or processed meats that people from other countries might not be used to or might not like.

10. Fried Butter

Fried butter is a ball of butter that has been fried and then covered with breadcrumbs. It’s a famous food at American state fairs and festivals, but people from other countries don’t like it because it’s high in fat and seems strange to eat deep-fried butter.
